Introducing James Moriarty, the young son of a very rich and popular Mathematics Professor. Moriarty's father, Prof. Moriarty, immigrated from Ireland, and thanks to his intelligence quickly became a very well-known (and well paid) professor of Mathematics at a famous university, meaning they're both so well off for cash they could do nothing for the rest of their lives. To supplement this cash flow, Prof. Moriarty--who's known for keeping his silence--helps some of the underworld balance their accounting.

Professor Moriarty has nothing to do with the story, though--everything sits on the shoulders of his son, James, who is OUR "Moriarty". A brilliant young mind who will one day "take over his father's seat at the university" (HA--no), Moriarty is an absolute sociopath with no concern or affection for any living beings--except for Sherlock Holmes, whom he obsesses over from afar, since he's the only person openly as intelligent as him.

Which means he and Sherlock can wage war over the city like one big game, and GOD is he looking forward to that--and so is Sherlock.

When he's not screwing Sherlock over, Moriarty is the silent hand that guides all of the city's higher crimes, including instigating and continuing the dangerous turf wars of the battling speakeasies. Moriarty is also the main donator to a very big speakeasy, and 221B's rival. "Dear Jim, my wife is a bitch, I want her dead...." "Dear Jim, I'm drowning in debts, please take me away..." etc.
Moriarty will happily buy your soul then wring you to the day he kills you.

Kind of important--in a lot of pictures, or comments, I'll say Moriarty's "in love" with Sherlock, or that he's obsessed with him--in no way whatsoever do I actually ship them or does Moriarty actually have romantic/sexual feelings for Sherlock. It's a deeper and much more passionate kind of love--the love of absolute hate--of two sides of the same kind who can't live while the other one does, too, but couldn't stand to be without them. Yes, screw you, I'm talking about the Scarlet Letter. Shut up.
